My reading today was all over the place. It struck me as I read that the Lord doesn't ask us to do anything He wasn't willing to do. Every detail had meaning.
““Give the following instructions to the people of Israel. This is how you are to deal with those who sin unintentionally by doing anything that violates one of the Lord’s commands.”
“If one of Israel’s leaders sins by violating one of the commands of the Lord his God but doesn’t realize it, he is still guilty.”
Leviticus 4:2, 22 NLT
I could highlight multiple verses today. I don't even know where to start. There were themes as I read and there was a ton of repetition in today’s chapter around the requirements for a sin offering. What particularly drew my attention was the amount of times “unintentional” was used, how the blood of the sacrificial animal was to be dispersed, and the importance of the removal of fat.
Whether the sin was intentional or not, it was still taken very seriously.
Atonement required the death of something. Blood represents life and life is pure and holy. What am I willing to die to today?
The fat being removed required the sacrifice to be without blemish. Jesus was without blemish.
“‘If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish.”
Leviticus 4:32 NKJV
I also love the parallel to Jesus, being the ultimate sacrifice “but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”
I Peter 1:19 NKJV
We have been redeemed
Just as the sin offering was to be burnt just outside of camp, Jesus was crucified outside of Jerusalem. There are just so many parallels.
Normally, I try to read right over the details and not get caught up with them however, as I have been reading Leviticus, it’s as if the Lord is saying "get caught up in the details, see how intentional I Am. I Am a God of order and I Am involved in every detail."
